Tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

Over the past 7 years, I have gained significant professional experience working in different companies around the world, in various capacities as a software engineer, solutions architect and data scientist. I hold a BSc in Computer Science from Ashesi University in Ghana and an MSc in Big Data from the University of Stirling in Scotland.

What’s your role at Nalytics? What does that entail on an average day?

I work as a Data Scientist and Big Data Engineer for Nalytics. As part of my role, I use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to analyse unstructured data to extract information such as entities (e.g. names of people, organizations and locations), sentiments, topics, detect different languages and automatically summarize documents. I also use supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques to build models which are used for classification, clustering and prediction tasks.

What’s your favourite aspect of the job?

I encounter business and technical challenges on a daily basis as a Data Scientist/Data Engineer at Nalytics. As a problem-solver, I find solutions to these bottlenecks by leveraging my analytical, research and critical thinking skills. I tend to approach challenges as opportunities which in turn enables me to stay abreast of current trends in the industry and gain hands-on experience by incorporating new methodologies to solve problems. Tackling these problems by thinking outside the box is what I look forward to every time I walk into the office.

What made you want to get into the tech industry?

My role model as a child was my uncle who is a medical doctor. I was poised to fill his shoes by pursuing a career in internal medicine. However, my love for video games influenced me to take a summer course in programming to develop my own game as a hobby; that course ignited my interest in technology and changed my career perspective permanently.

Are there any industry developments that you think people should keep an eye out for?

Although Artificial Intelligence has gained massive attention, the tech industry is constantly evolving with heightening interest in blockchain technology. Presently, it is used to power cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and Ethereum. I will be personally intrigued to see how Artficial Intelligence and Blockchain (two disruptive technologies that fall under different spectrums) can be applied to develop a decentralized intelligence platform.

What are your interests outside of work (hobbies, etc.)?

I am an avid chess player and video gamer. I not only enjoy watching football and basketball games, but would give up a quiet weekend resting at home to play these games with friends and acquaintences.
